Worldchanging Sportsmanship

The Driving Force Behind MMS Sports

Participating in MMS athletics is a privilege, not a right. We are part of something special, something bigger than ourselves. We are and must be set apart, even among “good sports.” As “Sportsmen and Sportswomen for Christ,” we go the extra mile in order to glorify God and bless others, soli Deo gloria – to the glory of God alone (1 Cor. 10:31).

The primary goal of MMS Sports is to show the world a better way.

Every MMS coach and athlete trains and competes to win. Winning is important. We run races to win (1 Cor. 9:24). But while winning is important, it is not our #1 priority.

Sports should be fun, and MMS Sports will always be fun, both to play and to watch. But while having fun is important, it is not our #1 priority.

Our #1 priority is to learn and share “worldchanging sportsmanship.”

What is that?

It starts with the general rules of good sportsmanship…
In practice, in games, on trips, at school, and at home:

  • We play fair.
  • We play our best for the team or group.
  • We take the results well.

Beyond this, every MMS athlete commits to embody “The MMS Code”:

“The MMS Code”

In practice, in games, on trips, at school, and at home:

  1. We focus on playing our best each day, whether we win or lose.
  2. We are “relentlessly positive.”
  3. We encourage our teammates – and our opponents.
  4. We never question calls.
  5. We never yell or curse in anger.
  6. We never give up.
  7. We do not run up the score on our opponents, who are made in the image of God, just like us.
  8. We are warm and gracious hosts.
  9. We leave each place better than we found it.
  10. We ensure that our words, character, actions and manners always bring glory to God alone.
